Church

A Devotional

Most Christians would say that going to church is part of being a believer. Volunteering to hand out programs, teaching children’s classes, working in the kitchen or doing other ministries that come with church attendance.

I too, agree that we were not meant to worship alone. However, I don’t believe that church is always about a building. We are the church! Our bodies, minds and souls are God’s creation and we are the church itself. Whether we are in a building listening to a divine message or if we are on a hike wondering in His creation! That’s all the worship He requires.

It drives me crazy when people are looked down upon because they don’t attend church on a regular basis. Show me where it says that’s required to be saved!? It’s about the relationship.

Our daughter recently left for college. She is over 2200 miles away. She asked us if we minded if she went to a different church than we go to (we are Seventh-Day Adventist), I told her that all I cared about was her relationship with God. If she wasn’t comfortable going to “our” church (where she doesn’t know a soul) that was fine, but being in the deep south I did warn her about anyone bringing in snakes or chickens for sacrifice (LOL).

She has found a church that is pastored by her friend’s father, and she loves it! She feels God’s presence and that is all I could ever have asked or prayed for! She didn’t have to go at all. She spends a lot of time outdoors and loves to wonder in His creation and beauty. I’m not worried about her and how she worships, but knowing that she’s found somewhere she can go, if she chooses, is wonderful and comforting.

Find your space. Kindle your relationship. Nobody else can direct you on that. It’s just like any relationship, it takes time and work. But it does not require a building.

  1. I had struggled with this for a long time. I grew up in a family where there was so much guilt associated with not attending church in the church building on the weekend. Over time, I have found that yes I do enjoy the collective worship in song and sometimes the messages from the pastor. But there are times when I find myself closest to God when I am outdoors – natural beauty is especially meaningful to me and my relationship with Jesus. No one is judging my clothing, or that I am daydreaming rather than listening to the sermon.
I have found wonderful supportive families in Christ through the church body, but I also come across dissent and gossip there too. And political opinions that I don’t think have their place in God’s house.

  2. I couldn’t agree more. We have to remember that the church body is still made up of flawed humans. That’s why it’s good to go out into nature to connect instead! But finding your place is always the best option no matter what that looks like!
